Health Info
Dear students, faculty, staff and parents,
As you may know, flu can be spread easily from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to prevent the spread of flu at Great Bay Community College but, we need your help to accomplish this.
We are working to monitor flu conditions and make decisions about the best steps to take concerning our institution. We will keep you updated with new information as it becomes available to us.
Here are a few things you can do to help:
- Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective. Please note that we have made hand sanitizer available at all of our high traffic locations including the One Stop, CAPS, Library, Front Desk, and Bookstore.
- Practice respiratory etiquette by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth; germs are spread this way.
- Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. A fever is a temperature taken with a thermometer that is equal to or greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius. Look for possible signs of fever: if the person feels very warm, has a flushed appearance, or is sweating or shivering.
- Stay home if you have flu or flu-like illness for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius) or signs of a fever (have chills, feel very warm, have a flushed appearance, or are sweating). This should be determined without the use of fever-reducing medications (any medicine that contains ibuprofen or acetaminophen). Don't go to class or work. Notify your instructor(s) of your absence via college e-mail.
- Talk with your health care providers about whether you should be vaccinated for seasonal flu. Also if you are at higher risk for flu complications from 2009 H1N1 flu, you should consider getting the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available. People at higher risk for 2009 H1N1 flu complications include pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, heart disease, or diabetes). For more information about priority groups for vaccination, visit: www.cdc.gov/flu.

We will notify you by e-mail of any additional changes to GBCC's strategy to prevent the spread of flu on our campus. In addition, we will post the most recent information on our web site and on Black Board.

Smoke Free Campus
Great Bay Community College (GBCC) is committed to providing its employees, students and visitors with a safe and healthy environment. The College recognizes that smoking on College premises is detrimental to the health and safety of all. To that end, GBCC has adopted a Smoke Free Campus policy. This means that there is to be no smoking by students, faculty, staff, vendors, or visitors in or around the periphery of the building, in parking lots, or on College grounds. However, smoking will be permitted within private vehicles. Smokers must extinguish cigarettes within vehicles and not extinguish, discard, or leave cigarette butts on college paved areas, including driving and parking lots, or sidewalk/walkway areas. This policy includes education, warnings, and fines to inform members of the college community and to insure compliance.
While this policy has existed since the college moved from Stratham to Portsmouth in 2008, there has not been a comprehensive statement of the policy, procedures for education and cessation, or procedures for enforcement. To fully implement this policy, the three phases outlined below will be carried out during the Fall 2011 semester.
The first phase will begin prior to the beginning of the semester. The policy statement and education / enforcement procedures will be published in the Student Handbook, on the college web site, and on posters placed throughout the campus. Additionally, the policy and procedures will be noted at events kicking off the new academic year. All materials will provide details of the policy, identify resources to support cessation, and detail the enforcement procedures. The educational activities will be continued throughout implementation and will attempt to coordinate with regional and national events such as the Great American Smoke-out.
The second phase will begin on Tuesday, September 6th. At this time the security staff will begin issuing warning cards to anyone found in violation of the policy. The cards will cite the policy, note the fines that will be issued in the third phase, note the that date fines will become effective, and identify cessation support resources.
The final phase will being on Monday, September 26th. Security personnel will begin approaching anyone found smoking on campus and will cite the policy. They will then ask for their college (student or faculty/staff) ID badge. If they do not have a college ID, they will ask for any picture ID. If the smoker is a student or employee, Security will record the date and time, college ID number, and/or address on a two-part citation form which will also reflect the policy and cessation information from the warning card. One copy will be given to the smoker, and the other copy returned to the Business Office to bill to the smoker's account in Banner. If the smoker is a vendor or visitor, they will be presented with a warning card and ask to extinguish what they are smoking. If they refuse or argue, they will be asked to leave the campus, and if they fail to comply, the Portsmouth Police Department will be contacted.
During the first two weeks of each subsequent semester, warnings only will be issued.
It is our hope that may current smokers will make the lifestyle choice to quit smoking. To that end we encourage you to look into the following resources.
