Summer Link: A College Transition Program

Summerlink - August 3-7

August 9-13, 2010

WHO? Summer Link is a designed for graduating high school seniors who have been admitted to Great Bay Community College (GBCC) for Fall 2010. Due to the success of the program, GBCC has opened up Summer Link to students who have graduated from high school within the past two years.

Summerlink - August 9th - 13th

WHAT? Summer Link is an “immersion” experience. Over the course of one-week, students will be introduced to the challenges and expectations of college life. Through a variety of academic and social activities, students will identify and practice a menu of skills and behaviors that support academic achievement and persistence. In addition, students will meet and interact with faculty, staff, and senior students; participate in student life events, and be introduced to the many services/activities offered by the college. Participants who successfully complete the week will earn one college credit. For most students, this credit will apply towards their degree program and in many cases, is transferable to other colleges and universities.

WHERE? Summer Link will be held on the Portsmouth campus. Summer Link students will be the second cohort of students to start their college experience in the new building.

WHEN? Summer Link will be held August 9th to August 13th. Students will come to campus Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm. Lunch will be provided each day.

WHY? It is not uncommon for Summer Link students to tell us they would prefer to spend the month of August working and playing. We can certainly appreciate this sentiment, but we can also tell you that individuals who attend Summer Link are grateful for the opportunity to meet fellow students, talk with faculty and develop a sense of comfort about college that otherwise might not happen. Students who attend Summer Link have a “leg-up” on college readiness as compared to those individuals who walk through the door for the first time in September. This one-week preparation is worth its weight in gold in terms of college adjustment and college skills.

AND HOW... To enroll in Summer Link: (1) apply to Great Bay Community College; (2) visit the Center for Academic Planning & Support (CAPS) to take your placement testing; and (3) meet with an advisor in CAPS to plan your summer and/or fall schedule. At this time, an advisor can enroll you in Summer Link. The cost for Summer Link is $180.00 (NH Residents). One additional expense is the One-College-One Book: (to be named soon). This book will be used throughout Summer Link as well as the 2009-2010 academic year.
