What is academic advising?
Advising is an important part of your academic experience. This partnership between you, the student, and a college representative will help you make decisions that will help you reach your educational goals. Your advisor is there to answer your questions and concerns, to assist in the registration process, and to help you make decisions as you develop academic plans that reflect your interest and skills, and that also take into account how your other obligations fit into those plans.

At Great Bay Community College, advising falls into three categories:

  • Advising for new students:
Students who have submitted applications and have been accepted into a program are called matriculated students. CAPS advisors help newly matriculated students by reviewing placement scores and college readiness. They also provide technology assistance and registration assistance for the first semester. New student advising occurs on a drop-in basis during regular CAPS hours.
  • Faculty Advising:
After students complete their initial advising through CAPS, they are encouraged to meet with their program advisor. Program advisors have the most information about each major as it relates to career goals; they are also available to assist with academic issues and provide support throughout the semester. Students are encouraged to seek out their advisor during the first 6 weeks of college to talk about their interests, progress, and adjustment to college. This advisor will also be the contact for registration after the first semester. It is a good idea to have an appointment when seeking faculty advising, or to visit during posted office hours. Students admitted to the Liberal Arts program can meet with a faculty advisor in the Advising Center during posted hours. (see below)
  • Advising Center:
Advising Center advisors are available to help students who are not accepted into a program but are taking classes at the college. These students are known as non-matriculated students. Matriculated students who are unable to meet with their faculty advisor due to a scheduling conflict may also meet with someone in the Advising Center. Liberal Arts students may meet with a Liberal Arts faculty advisor in the Advising Center. The Advising Center has hours posted outside of the Center, as well as on our website.
