Artist Statement

As a Latin American artist, I embark on a dedicated exploration of the human psyche, delving into the realms of the shadow and the subconscious. Rooted in the rich traditions of Latin American art, my practice merges magic realism, surrealism, and automatism to weave intricate narratives of self-discovery and psychoanalysis.

Each artwork is a voyage, disrupting tranquility to delve into the concealed aspects of our inner worlds. It serves as an invitation for viewers to journey through the complex landscapes of human emotions and experiences. While my art reflects the collective human condition, it is also deeply personal, offering a mirror for my own self-discovery and psychoanalytical exploration. Through the blend of magic realism, surrealism, and automatism, I provide a path for introspection, urging individuals to confront their own shadows and embark on the journey of self-discovery.

Angela Ales, of Andalusian and Lebanese descent, was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, and moved to the United States in 1984. She studied at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City and earned her Master of Fine Arts from the Miami International University of Art and Design.

Blending Magic Realism, Surrealism, and Automatism, Ales creates deeply introspective, thought-provoking works that explore the intersection of the conscious and unconscious mind. Her art, exhibited across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Australia, addresses socio-political themes shaped by her experiences as a Latin American immigrant and woman.

Through her commitment to authenticity and exploration of the subconscious, Ales’ work offers a powerful reflection on identity, culture, and the human condition.
