What is Praxis?

The Praxis Series tests measure teacher candidates’ knowledge and skills. The tests are used for licensing and certification processes and include the components listed below.

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core)

These tests measure academic skills in reading, writing and mathematics. They were designed to provide comprehensive assessments that measure the skills and content knowledge of candidates entering teacher preparation programs. These tests are designed to be taken early on within an education major’s program, possibly upon entrance or within the first two years. See Praxis Core information.

Praxis II Subject Assessments

These tests measure subject-specific content knowledge, as well as general and subject-specific teaching skills, that you need for beginning teaching. See Praxis II information.

Preparing for the Praxis

Great Bay Community College, through its PLATOweb Learning account, provides the opportunity to practice and prepare for the Praxis Core Academic Skills and Praxis II through an online assessment and skill-building curriculum.

What are the benefits of using PLATOweb?

  • May build confidence and skills for the actual exam.
  • Access to learning paths that are generated by the results of the assessment, allowing for skill development in trouble spots.
  • GBCC students can access these resources FREE of charge.

Will PLATOweb cost me anything?

If you are a student at Great Bay, the PLATOweb assessment and corresponding curriculum are FREE. If you are a community member or a student from another institution, the fee for this service is $100 for four months of access.
